lyrics

THE BATTLE OF LEWISHAM

It was Nineteen Seventy - Seven
they were closer to Hell than Heaven
But there were other things to see
If you weren't deceived by the Jubilee
There was aggro, there was punk
the rise of the National Front
To Lewisham they did march
They thought their numbers would be large
to stop them many joined the charge

chorus
Some call it a battle
And many came to fight
For freedom and equality -
You know those things are right
The war is never over
but you could hear them chant
The workers united won't be defeated
will never be defeated

In Clifton Rise and New Cross Road
Many decent people showed
To oppose their racialism
And Far Right Wing fascism
Through clouds of smoke the missiles flew
Above a thin line of blue
To Lewisham they carried on
The fascist march would soon be gone
But down the years the fight goes on

Chorus:
Some call it a battle
And many came to fight
For freedom and equality -
You know those things are right
The war is never over
but you could hear them chant
The women united won't be defeated
will never be defeated

chorus
Some call it the battle of Lewisham
And many came to fight
For freedom and equality -
You know those things are right
The war is never over
but you could hear them chant
Black and white united won't be defeated

The people united won't be defeated
the people united won't be defeated
the people united won't be defeated
will never be defeated
