In January 2012 Ceri James announced that he would play 52 shows (almost all solo acoustic gigs). Originally he started recording an acoustic record so that he would have CD's to sell at those gigs. However, some of the recurring themes in James's work quickly surfaced in the new songs. One important issue is the conflict between city and country life. Also another theme is the struggle to find an identity in London and there's commentary on the artistic and music community of the South East and beyond. The title City Fields is used as a banner to highlight these themes and the CD includes bonus songs some of which are also based on stories about city life.
The EP contains 4 new songs and the CD has 6 bonus tracks (4 acoustic versions 2 alternative versions) of older songs. It is a joint release on Heed Records (digital) and the CD release is exclusively licensed to Deep River Records. Deep River is a label that works mostly with singer/songwriters and bands in and around Deptford hence Deep River.
Each CD is individually packaged and has its own stamp, a vinyl style disc and signed copies are available if requested. There are also bonus photos available plus lyrics and song notes through bandcamp. The CD is a unique artefact.
